How to Redeem Your Travel Points for Maximum Value

Many families can easily earn over 500,000 travel rewards points through Travel Hacking in a year. Those 500,000 points could be worth around $5,000 of free travel, or if you learn to maximize the redemption value, they could be worth over $25,000 in free travel! Knowing how to redeem points at a good value can keep you from wasting your points and being able to use them instead for multiple luxurious trips.

Not All Points Are Created Equal

My most popular and eye-opening post introduces this key concept: Not all points are created equal. You want to earn the best type of points, but you also want to make sure that you can redeem those points for maximum value. You want to be able to redeem your points for at least 1¢ per point, if your redemption is less than that, it's a bad redemption. What most people miss though is that you can often redeem points for, at least, 3-5¢ per point if you learn how to do it well. 

A Great Tool

There are a number of great tools that you can use to find high-value points redemptions, especially on flights and hotels. I want to share one of them with you today though called Rooms.Aero. It's completely free and allows you to find great hotel redemptions.

How It Works

Rooms.Aero lets you search four major hotel brands (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, and IHG). You can then specify all kinds of preferences in your search - which Hotel Brand (Hotel, Resort, All Inclusive, etc), which country (Yes, it can search all over the world), how many cents per point you're looking for with your redemption (1¢-5¢ per point), and more. 

The Results 

Since I want top-value for my points, I searched for places that would give me over 5¢ per point. That led me to Hyatt Properties in three different countries!

The Pell Hotel - Rhode Island 

My wife just stayed at The Pell Hotel in Rhode Island with a friend last month and really enjoyed it. Searching on Rooms.Aero, if we wanted to go back there as a couple, we could book this King Size room for just 9,000 Hyatt points per night, even though it retails for $646 per night (That's 7.1¢ per point value!). We could stay there for a week for only 54,000 Hyatt Points, instead of paying $3,876!

Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa

You could enjoy a vacation on private island by going to the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa. Rather than paying the normal $2,280 per night, you could book a room for 35,000 Hyatt Points per night! That's an incredible value of 6.5¢ per point! 

Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome

If you're looking to head to Europe and explore Paris, you could stay at the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome. You could pay $1,529 per night, but it's much better to book it for just 45,000 Hyatt Points per night. That's a redemption value of 3.3¢ per point!

Think of the Possibilities

If the average family can earn 500,000 travel reward points in a year, that means that you could get 6 Nights in Paris, France, 6 more nights in the Maldives, and 6 more nights in Rhode Island with those 500,000 points (5.2¢ per point)! This would cost you over $26,000 if you were paying in cash, but you could get all of that for free with your travel rewards points. If those aren't your preferred destinations, you could search for yourself on Rooms.Aero and see what you find.
