How I Booked a Luxury Birthday Trip to Secrets Moxché Cancun for Free with Travel Hacking
Mar 28, 2025My wife & I have birthdays that are four days apart, so every year we try to get away for a birthday trip. Here’s how Travel Hacking has changed the way we celebrate… Before we had points and miles, we used to save & scrounge to try to get away for one night for our birthdays each year. Now, we've accumulated over 3 Million points & miles that we use to travel the world! This year, we used a small fraction of our points to enjoy a 4-Day Weekend at the Secrets Moxché All-Inclusive Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico! The trip would’ve cost us over $6,000, but we got it free - No saving or scrounging involved anymore! Here's my review of the resort and also help you see how we used our points to book this incredible trip.
The Resort
The resort property is located right on the ocean, has a man-made lagoon, and has many infinity pools (Including the rooftop pool that this picture was taken from). The staff was incredibly helpful and took great care of us throughout our stay. They have daily shows, activities, and offers to go on excursions throughout Cancun. They also have an on-site spa in addition to several shops for you to enjoy.
The Room
We booked a Preferred Club Junior Suite Ocean View room. It was a large studio room that had a king-size bed, a large bathroom, and an ocean-view balcony with a two-person tub on it. The resort was quiet and we rested very well in this comfy room. The other great thing was that they offer 24/7 Room Service with food and drinks. One day they brought us birthday cake, another night we ordered dessert, and on our final morning, we ordered eight delicious breakfast entrees which fueled us up for our trip home. Because we booked a Preferred Club room, that gave us special access to the rooftop infinity pool/restaurant and some other perks throughout our stay.
The Food & Experience
As an All-Inclusive offers unlimited food & drink, we had the choice between so many amazing restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (My favorite one was the multiple filet mignon entrees that I enjoyed at this French restaurant) Here's the list of restaurants we had to choose from for our meals:
- Bisou - French Restaurant
- Allora - Italian Restaurant
- Suki - Japenese Restaurant
- Dos Almas - Mexican Restaurant
- Ember - Fire Kitchen
- Seasoul - Oceanfront Restaurant
- Observatory - Rooftop Restaurant
- Bamboo - Vegan Grill
- Market Cafe - International Breakfast & Lunch Buffet
- Barefoot Grill - Oceanside Lunch Grill
- Coco Cafe - 24/7 Coffee & Snack Bar
How We Booked It with Points
One of the best things about Hyatt Points is that you can use them for more than just their hotels - You can book All-Inclusive Resorts with their points. You can earn Hyatt Points with the Hyatt Credit Card and you can also transfer them from your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points. It cost 55,000 points per night for our room. It retailed for $1,550 per night, which meant that we got almost 3¢ per point value on our booking, which was a great value!
We wanted to make sure to find flights that best fit our timeframes, so we booked one-way tickets with two separate airlines. We flew to Cancun on Jet Blue for 17,000 points each by transferring those points from our Chase Ultimate Rewards. We flew home on United Airlines for 26,000 points each by using the points we've collected with our United Credit Card.
