Big Bonuses with Business Credit Cards
Nov 01, 2024Most people are surprised to learn that they are eligible for business credit cards, even if they don’t own a traditional business. You don’t need to have a registered LLC, a storefront, or employees to qualify. In fact, if you have a side hustle, a freelance gig, or even engage in small activities like occasionally selling items on Facebook, you likely already have what counts as a “business” in the eyes of credit card companies so that you could sign up for the big bonuses business credit cards offer!
Why You Qualify
Credit card issuers define businesses broadly. If you engage in any activity with the intent of making a profit, even if it’s on a small scale, you can qualify as a Sole Proprietor. For example, if you drive for a rideshare service, rent out a room on Airbnb, or sell crafts online, sell items on Facebook Marketplace, these are legitimate business activities. When applying for a business credit card, you can use your Social Security Number in place of an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and list yourself as the sole proprietor. You also just use your name as the "business name".
The Benefits of Business Credit Cards
Once you qualify, the benefits of having a business credit card are compelling - Typically ranging from $500-$2,500 in value. Business credit cards typically offer higher sign-up bonuses, better rewards structures, and perks that can significantly benefit your business activities. For example, some cards offer huge points bonuses (90,000-200,000pts) for hitting spending thresholds within the first few months. Others provide high rewards rates (5% Back) on categories like office supplies, advertising, or travel—perfect if your business expenses align with those categories.
Business cards often come with features like purchase protection, extended warranties, and travel insurance, which are valuable for both personal and business use. Additionally, having a business card allows you to separate personal and business expenses, making tax season much simpler.
Can you use it for Personal Expenses?
If you have a tiny "business" with relatively little expenses, you know that you could never meet a signup bonus through business expenses alone. However, if you are a Sole Proprietor (Meaning you don't have an LLC or Corporation for your business), you can put as many personal expenses as you want on a business card. In legal terms, there is no separation between the individual and the business when you are a Sole Proprietor. So you can use your business credit card just like a personal card and redeem those rewards for personal benefits. Plus, a business card won't impact your personal credit report and won't affect your 5/24 number. Important Note - Putting personal expenses on a Business Credit Card is not recommended if you have an LLC or Corporation.
